Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born in Chandigarh on 6 January 1959 into a Punjabi Hindu family of Ram Lal Nikhanj, a teak merchant, and his wife Rajkumari. His family moved to Fazilka after partition before eventually moving to Chandigarh. He was a student at D. A. V. College in Chandigarh. Dev made an impressive debut for Haryana in November 1975 against Punjab with a 6-wicket haul, restricting Punjab to just 63 runs. He finished the season with 121 wickets in 30 matches. In the 1976–77 season opener against Jammu & Kashmir, he had a match haul of 8/36. He achieved his then best innings haul of 8/20 in just 9 overs in the second innings to skittle Bengal for 58 runs. In the 1977–78 season, he claimed 8/38 in the first innings against Services and took his maiden 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket. In the 1978–79 season, he took a 5-wicket haul in the pre-quarterfinal match against Bengal. He played county cricket for Northamptonshire between 1981 and 1983 and for Worcestershire during the 1984 and 1985 seasons. Dev captained Haryana for the first time in the 1979–80 season. In the 1990–91 Ranji season, he led Haryana to the championship, scoring 141 and taking 5 wickets in the semi-final against Bengal. The final featured many international cricketers, including Dev, Chetan Sharma, Ajay Jadeja, and Vijay Yadav for Haryana, and Sanjay Manjrekar, Vinod Kambli, Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Salil Ankola, and Abey Kuruvilla for Bombay. Haryana won by 3 runs. Dev retired in 1994 as the first player to take 200 ODI wickets, and holding the world record for the highest number of wickets taken in Test cricket, a record subsequently broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000. He coached the Indian national team between September 1999 and September 2000.

Kapil Dev's significance comes from his unique all-round achievements and his leadership in India's first Cricket World Cup triumph in 1983. He remains the only player in history to have taken more than 400 Test wickets (434) and scored more than 5,000 Test runs. He held the world record for most Test wickets until Courtney Walsh broke it in 2000. He also held the record for the highest individual score (175*) scored by a batsman batting at number 5 or lower in ODIs until 2023, when it was superseded by Glenn Maxwell. Dev rates his all-round performance in the Test against Pakistan at Chepauk, Madras, as his career best: he took a 10-wicket haul (4/90 in the first innings and 7/56 in the second innings) and scored 84 in 98 balls. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1982, and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2002, Wisden named him the Indian Cricketer of the Century. In 2010, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. In 2013, he received the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, considered the highest honor conferred by the BCCI for retired professional cricket players.
