Chuni Goswami was born in Kishoreganj, Bengal Presidency, and moved to Calcutta in his childhood. His elder brother Manik Goswami was also a footballer who played for George Telegraph. Goswami began his playing career with the University of Calcutta team, captaining them to win the All India Inter University Championships for the Sir Ashutosh Mukjerjee Trophy, scoring the match winner in the final against the University of Bombay. He later represented Bengal in the Santosh Trophy and was part of the 1956 title win with P. K. Banerjee against Mysore. Goswami joined the Mohun Bagan junior team in 1946 at age 8, graduated to the senior team in 1954, and made his club debut on 29 May that year in a 3–0 win against Eastern Railway, scoring a goal. He played for Mohun Bagan his entire club career despite numerous offers, including one reported from Tottenham Hotspur. He captained Mohun Bagan in five seasons from 1960 to 1964, winning the Calcutta Football League six times, the IFA Shield and Durand Cup four times each. Goswami made his international debut for India in 1956 in a 1–0 victory over the Chinese Olympic team. He captained India to the Asian Games Gold Medal in 1962 and a Silver in the 1964 AFC Asian Cup in Tel Aviv. Known for his partnership with P. K. Banerjee and Tulsidas Balaram, he is considered one of "Indian football's holy trinity."

Chuni Goswami's significance lies in his dual-sport career as both a footballer and a first-class cricketer. As a footballer, he scored 12 goals in 37 international matches and captained India to its first Asian Games gold in 1962. He was the poster boy of Indian football, known for his dribbling, passing, and ball control. As a cricketer, he made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 1962–63 Ranji Trophy season, playing as a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium pacer. He captained Bengal to the Ranji Trophy final in 1971–72, though they lost to Mumbai. In 46 first-class matches, he scored 1,592 runs with one century and seven fifties, and took 47 wickets. After retiring from football, he fully focused on cricket, appearing in two Ranji Trophy finals. Goswami died on 30 April 2020 at age 82 in Kolkata after a prolonged illness, suffering from diabetes, prostate infection, and neurological problems, with his family confirming a cardiac arrest. On 15 January 2020, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honour, and in April 2023, the "Chuni Goswami Gate" was unveiled at the Mohun Bagan club headquarters by Sunil Gavaskar.
